Gray Whales: We see Gray Whales from December until March. Gray whales travel from Alaska to Mexico to have their calves or to mate, and then head back to Alaska to feed. They use land to navigate so they usually stay less than 3 miles from shore.
Blue Whales: Blue Whales are seen from May through August. Blue whales are the biggest species on the planet and we are lucky to see them all summer long!
Humpback Whales: Humpback whales are in San Diego year round! Humpbacks like to feed on the local anchovies, with a technique known as bubble netting. This is where a group of Humpbacks work together to swim around a group of fish blowing bubbles in order to force them into a tight ball.
Fin Whales: Fin whales are spotted through the months of March to May. Fin whales are usually found in the deeper water and stay further from shore. About 9 miles out off the coast of San Diego is the 9 mile bank where it drops from 400 ft. to 4,000 ft.! that is where Fin whales are typically found in San Diego.

Minke Whales: Minke whales are spotted between the months of April and October. Minke Whales are the smallest whale we see in the area. They are quite shy which makes them difficult to spot, however, that doesn’t mean they aren’t out there! Our captains do indeed spot Minke whales and that is always a rare and special treat when we do!
Bryde’s Whales: Through the months of June to September is when you can see Bryde’s whales throughout San Diego! The Bryde’s whale is actually pronounced ‘Broo-dess’ and are critically endangered. Seeing a Bryde’s whale in San Diego is a spectacular experience.
Orcas: Also known as the killer whale, we occasionally get to see Orca Whales here in San Diego! There is a Tropical Pacific pod of Orca whales that comes up from Mexico when the water temperatures change in the fall. If Orcas are in the San Diego area, sometimes it can be more challenging to find other wildlife because they are a predatory species.
