Understanding the communication of the Ocean's Giants
Whales are the ocean’s social creatures who almost always travel in pods. They use a variety of sounds to socialize with one another. Mainly using clicks, whistles and pulses.
These giants need sound to navigate through the ocean and stick together. The National Ocean Service put out an article that dives deep into what the sounds mean. The article stated that the clicking sounds are necessary for them to navigate as they migrate across the vast open sea. From the sound wave they create they bounce off of objects, then the waves return to the whale, allowing the whale to identify the shape of the object. These clicks can even help to differentiate between friendly creatures and predators.
Some other sounds they make whistles and pulse which make it seem as if the whales are singing. These types of sounds are used for social activities. A pulse call to the human ear sounds like a squawk and a screeching noise. The pulses help the whales differentiate their pod from strangers. It has been studied that each pod has its own distinct whistles and pulses.

Whale Language
Marine biologist have found that in different oceans whales “speak” different languages. A whale in the Pacific have different noises than those in the Atlantic.
Furthermore, this language is also used to help guide whales through the dark waters. Using echolocation helps them know where food is and how to navigate the vast waters.
Another fact about their language is they are the loudest creatures on earth. The average human conversation is around 50 deicbals whereas a whale’s conversation is around 230 decimals! Talk about an ocean giant!
Listen to a short clip of whale songs!
The loudest and the deepest voice of the sea is the humpback whale. We see humpbacks year round in San Diego. They are mainly distughsed by thier tails and the dominant black coloring of their bodies. The males of the humpback species are known for thier loud and impressive mating calls. They sing these calls for few dozen minutes and up to 20 hours!
Among whales we often here a repeated song of theirs as other whales around them get inspiration and whistle the same tunes. This again reinforces how much a social creature they are and the communities they create in the deep blue sea. Below is a 1 minute video displaying the song of these giants.
