When is whale watching season in San Diego?
One of the most common questions we get asked is “when is whale watching season in San Diego?” There are certain times during the year that the chances to see a whale is greater than others due to the migration path of these animals. With most of these migrations overlapping, we have whales all year round! Depending on the type of whale you are hoping to see, there are certain times of the year that will have a higher chance.
The best time to see our amazing Blue Whales would be in the summer. They will start to be seen off the California coast around May and can stay here as late as October. However, peak season in San Diego is usually May through August. The next whale is one that we will see easily offshore starting in November until early March, and sometimes even see a mom and calf as late as May! This would be the Gray Whale; a curious baleen that likes to stay close to shore for food. Our stinky, but loved, Minke Whales are mostly spotted June through September, and even if you don’t see one, you may end up smelling it if you’re downwind!
Whale watching in San Diego is a great pastime with these migratory whales. To make it better, some whales can be seen in San Diego year round! The Humpback Whale and the Fin Whale spend the year in San Diego with some fluctuations in feeding grounds. Between the playful demeanor of the Humpback and the size of the Fin Whale (second largest to the Blue Whale), whale watching is always in season in San Diego!
